The Greatest Things Happen When You Surrender to Life

by Lucia Hoxhain English, Fertility

So what does it mean to ‘Surrender’?

Surrender is a state of being wholly present.

It’s not: giving in to an enemy, giving up or being lazy.

Surrender is:  living in your body and soul and feeling at ease.  It’s being aware, that so much in life is actually out of your control and accepting it fully.  Not as something being wrong, but as a fact of life and opportunity for an adventure.  It’s being able to let situations breathe, it’s a feeling of openness…

To create anything, you have to be in some state of surrender.

If you can deeply surrender, infinite possibility becomes real just like I am mentioning in my book.

Stepping out of the routine – the over-working and the over-thinking – and just breathing in full aware state of being – is when things genuinely flourish.

You can direct energy and wherever you put your energy (good or bad), it always expands, but you can’t actually be in full control of your life!

Control is the opposite of creativity.  Wanting things to go your way specifically as a matter of control can cause a never ending hardwork chase with negative chain of results that feel like a failure.

Control tends to kick in when you feel unsafe or in toxic environments (for example: surrounded by stress, time pressure, attachment, abuse or neglect of any kind…)

When your life is toxic, you might find yourself working overly-hard to win, to succeed, to “best” your opponent and to be right at all costs.  Its causing for you to live your life in variations of anxiety.  Striving for a baby, love, or fighting for a relationship that isn’t healthy can be very exausting process and lead us to feel hopeless…

When you’re feeling disempowered, lost, blocked or stuck, it creates stress, anger and sadness.  It’s easy to lash out and throw fits as opposed to breathe with the opportunity to pause and see the situation in front of you clearly.  It’s not uncommon to blame other people or even the world being unfair.  It’s tempting to try to force or manipulate things that is creating the pressure that comes back to us and paralyses us in life.

Typically, all of this creates the energy of a struggle that is leading us to fail over and over again.

Creating more space in your life can help you surrender to the moment instead of fighting to be right.

Detox the heaviness.  Release the blockages and give yourself more freedom around what you want the most.  Letting go of the heavy stuff takes the pressure off and we can breathe and BE and surrender.

What does surrender feel like?

There is ease in some way where there was once tension.

When I used to teach yoga in London, I used to encourage people to practice in such a way, that they stop forcing their bodies into poses and start easing into places that feel good.  This exact principle also works in life – try just for a moment to force your body in any way and you’ll be stressed, probably thinking a lot and maybe even get injured… and that’s the opposite of living your life with freedom.   The only life you have.  Life that has been given to you as a gift.

A lack of surrender makes things really hard that should be easy.

This is a great way to see the effects of surrender.

Try really hard to doodle the best picture you’ve ever done.

I bet you’ll feel really intense, stuck in your head, questioning if it’s really the “best” and maybe even panic over it.

Sometime later, make a cup of tea, turn on some music and doodle for fun.

Is there a difference?

Surrender is something magical and it’s somewhat scary if you haven’t done it.  You might feel like you’re losing your edge, losing your cool, and maybe, if you’re a really driven person, you might feel like you’re losing your identity.

Let it all go.

What your version of surrendering to life would look like?

Let me know.  Write to me…  I would love to hear your story and all that what you heard reading this article may be possible for you if you only create the space for you to surrender to what is.

It is heart-opening, freeing and very beautiful process that will open the gates to a world experienced newly.

Beautiful writing, I so needed this right now and my beautiful therapist is showing me the way to wonderful and very relevant articles and subjects that have alluded me, like this one.
My marriage is finishing, its so full of love but lacks emotional connection and we both stop that and yet both need it. We are both quite ‘alpha’ and ‘drivers’.
We fight for our voices to be heard, we both are very focussed on work as its a controlled secure environment for us. I fear conflict and push things down as he is aggressive and defensive, its neither of our faults and yet both of our faults. I am tired and am also excited about being alone at 51 and finding me. Not sure I have ever known who me as co-dependancy dominates my life but I have had snippets of peace, I am hungry for more. I hope hubby finds peace, he deserves it but he is narcissistic and cannot find any fault in himself. So sad. I hope he works it all out but its not for me to keep trying to fix him. It’s his journey soon and I will support him but no longer mother him. Its my time now.
    Thank you for this article
