Giving birth transforms women’s lives in many and beautiful ways. Gazing into your baby’s eyes you feel joy, love and apprehension at the miracle of this new life and the great responsibility of looking after this tiny baby.
The process of birthing is a physically and emotionally demanding event and affects women in many ways.
Women often feel exhausted and in shock after birth, this can last from a few days to weeks or longer depending on the woman and her particular birth experience.
The changes experienced can be profound, exhilarating, frightening, unexpected and overwhelming at times and it is vital and very important for all new mums to nurture and look after themselves so that they can be available for their baby’s needs.
Yoga can positively support new mums on this journey of changing responsibilities by offering stability, reassurance and positivity. Practicing pranayama (breath work), asana (yoga poses), meditation and relaxation techniques can actively support new mums to feel more centred in the midst of changing emotions, changing nappies, sleep deprivation, general feelings of chaos and often simultaneous feelings of helplessness and utter joy and happiness.
Yoga can teach all new mums not to be shaken about uncontrollably by the new demands placed upon them; they learn to accept, and to accommodate to the changing circumstance with grace and ease and go with the flow.
